Next Meeting this Sunday!

The Great Grange Road Big Lunch 19th July 2009

Our Road, Our Party!

Grange Road was once a bustling community; let’s make it one again!

Inspired by the Eden Project’s Big Lunch campaign, residents of Grange Road are organising our own Street Party for the 19th July. Not only is this a chance to meet your neighbours, but it is also an opportunity to share stories and swap skills.

You can join in if you have something you can share or even if its just because you want to!

Can you cook an amazing curry?

Tell a good story about the history of Grange Road?

Give great gardening tips?

Sing a song, bang a drum, strum a harp or generally make some noise?

Make the best cup of tea in the world?

Draw a brilliant picture?

Show someone how to knit a scarf?

Or are you a local kid who would like to get involved in an arts project about the history of our road?

Our Big Lunch is not going to be just about the 19th July, it’s about Grange Road and our community!

Come and meet us this Sunday (21st June) at 2PM at the Kitchen Garden Cafe on York Road.

Last Meeting Update

Notes from Big Lunch Meeting 09/06/09

Pip updated us about the council and The Eden Project and suggested we continue to aim for the 19th July for now.

We talked about where to hold the party again and we still all feel it should just be a small section of the street with the potential of moving cars.

IDEAS

Food competitions – Different categories such as:

Vegetables, Cakes, Curry, bangers and mash and a children’s competition.

We also talked about the potential of a Pet Competition perhaps with different categories. This could be organised by the youngest member of the committee. It was also suggested that if there are lots of categories, some of which can be silly, we can offer more people prizes and just make it fun.

Prizes were also discussed and it was suggested that prizes could be offered from people on the street, for example Juicy Lucy products, haircut, CD’s or artwork and/or we could ask local business to donate.

History of Grange Road

As part of the build up to The Big Lunch it has been suggested that research is undertaken to find out what exciting history the street has and is presented at the event. This could be done in one or a number of ways.

Suggestions: Through gathering oral history from older residents of the street and using it in some kind of art project for the younger residents. Using photo’s as a timeline. Developing a map to find out people’s journeys to Grange Road.

For the day...

We need to think about where we are going to get chairs and tables from, the organisation of food, where presentations are going to be, where activities might take place and how organised/laid back we want the day.

Towards the end of the meeting we spoke about how to make what we are doing sustainable and to develop the community of Grange Road after The Big Lunch is over. Ian suggested a Grange Road directory where by people can offer what they are good at/favours to other people on the road and these will be returned in other ways maybe from other people. For example, guitar lessons, doing somebody’s shopping, playing chess, gardening and so on.

Next Steps

Pip is going to put together some information for a new flyer that asks for people to contribute more specific things to the lunch and continues her negotiations with council/Eden Project. Laura is going to look into the oral history/art project and ask the nursery if they’d like to be involved in some way. Ian is going to look into the Grange Road directory and Ute is going to start putting together the world map.

Please could you ask any older residents you know on the street who have lived around Kings Heath for some years if they would fancy a chat and a cuppa for this oral history project as well as asking any children on the street if they would like to be involved in an art project. The art project could be in any art form, which will probably be decided by the children. Please reassure anyone whose child would like to get involved that Laura is CRB checked.

At the end of the meeting we talked about people taking responsibility for different things. If you feel you can contribute to any of the above or can think of anything else you could offer, please let everyone know.

Our First Meeting

Wow, that was nerve wracking.

I was so worried that no one would tern up to our first Grange Road Big Lunch meeting. I'm glad to say seven lovely people made it and everyone has something really cool to add.

Our first step is too get in touch with the council to find out exactly how much of the road that we can have for the big day. Shabdam and Laura have volunteered to get onto the council.

As soon as we know what we have to play with we will all get together to start serious planning!

I can't wait!!!!!

Grange Road 19th July 2009

On Sunday 19th July 2009, The Big Lunch is inviting you and all 61 million people across the UK to simultaneously sit down to eat lunch with your neighbours, in the middle of your street as a simple act of community.

A new initiative run by the Eden Project, The Big Lunch encourages communities to come together through growing food and flowers; creating street music, art and theatre; dressing the street and, of course, cooking and eating together.

Would you like to get involved in organising a big lunch on Grange Road?

Please come along to our first meeting on Sunday 24th May at 2.00 at the Kitchen Garden Café on York Road
